What is Open edX?

Open edX is a cloud-hosted, open-source learning platform originally developed by Harvard and MIT to deliver massive open online courses (MOOCs). Today, it powers online education for universities, corporations, and governments worldwide, supporting 55 million+ learners across 53 languages.

You can create, deliver, and analyze several learning experiences such as self-paced courses, live degree programs, and instructor-led training. The flexible course authoring tool allows multiple educators to work on the same course. You can design learning content with videos, H5P elements, VR/AR, and open-response assessments.

Other key features include automated grading, discussion forums, proctored exams, real-time analytics, assessments within the course, and custom branding.

What is Open edX Best For?

Open edX is best at large-scale course creation and delivery thanks to its course authoring tools. You can build professional courses with videos, quizzes, and discussion forums via the platform's drag-and-drop studio interface. It does not require coding knowledge to build courses. Teachers can preview content before publishing, reuse templates, and even schedule automated lesson releases. This is why 90% of top universities choose Open edX as it allows educators to focus on teaching instead of navigating the software.
